This is the first of a new series: Suddenly Supernatural by an author of several middle grade chapter books. Kat has "suddenly" discovered on her birthday that she shares her mother's talents; mom is a medium. Kat has always been rather embarrassed by her mother's calling and doesn't know if she wants to see and communicate with ghosts. She has a first best friend who moved to town recently, Jae to study with a local music teacher. Kat and Jae find themselves trying to solve a mystery concerning a ghost, Suzanne who has ties to their school and Jae's music teacher. Both of them also are trying to decide about their own futures -- whether Kat will accept her gift for ghosts and whether Jae will purse her musical gift of playing the cello. They also join forces to stand up to the school's catty bullies.
