Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride; young adult, paranormal, humor; 342 pages (about 10 hours on CD)
My (non-work-related) book club picked this for our September meeting, so I listened to the audio book on a recent road trip. The verdict? Lish McBride needs to write more. Now.
This book is about Sam (or Samhain Corvus LaCroix, as is his given name). Sam is a college drop-out who works at a fast food chain, and spends his free time skateboarding and hanging with his friends Brooke, Ramone, and Frank. Until one day, when a necromancer walks into Plumpy's and freaks out--because Sam is apparently a necromancer as well. The next thing Sam knows, he's getting death threats from supernatural beasties, and receiving Brooke's reanimated head in the mail, while uncovering powers he never knew he had.
This book is awesome and hilarious and fantastic. Sam's voice is spot-on for his stints as narrator, and his sarcastic take on the world makes this funnier than a book about dead friends and supernatural mafais ought to be. Also, Sam's sort of a rarity in YA lit--a college-age main character who lives on his own, but hasn't quite found his place in the world. Why aren't there more books about this age group? The narrator for the audio book captures Sam's tone perfectly, and the song titles for each chapters made things interesting. I'd love to read more set in this world, even if it's not about these characters--though if it were about these characters, it would be even better. So far I'm 2 for 2 with book club--can't wait to see what they pick next!
