This book follows the daily routines of a family in rural New England. The family consists of dad who is a veterinarian, mom, and 3 kids. The central tragedy occurs when the oldest son is shot in a hunting accident and ends up in a coma for a long while. This gives the family plenty of time to reflect on the situation and wonder who is responsible. The boy eventually recovers but you feel the pain in such a real way. Then a stranger shows up with some interesting news and a request which puts things into another type of tailspin. Loved the writing and the way this book is structured. It was a very good call to read this novel.
