Batman: War Games, vol. 2: Tides; graphic novel; 192 pages
In this second installment, Batman struggles to keep Gotham from being destroyed in an all-out gang war. This is the installment where the pieces start to come together for Batman: he recognizes the events as part of one of his "war games"--contingency plans for any worst-case scenario he can think of. Knowing the plan helps, but not Batman has to see through his part in it, to ensure that things play out smoothy. The appearance of Black Mask throws a wrench in everything.
I enjoyed this for what it was: vacation reading that I could pick up and put down quickly. A shining example of fine Batman writing this is not. Characters mostly wind up making things worse through their own stupid mistakes, so that by the end I was just ready to give up.
