Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson 341 pages

Amy suffers from unimaginable guilt. She was driving when her car was hit by a car speeding through a red light. Her passenger, her father, was killed. Amy is unable to get behind the wheel of a car. Her mother decides to move cross country and put her twin brother in a drug rehab program. So Amy is left by herself in their old house in California and a 19 year old son of a former family friend is hired to drive Amy in her family car to her new home in Connecticut. Although her mother has a detailed itinerary for the trip, Amy and Roger take one detour after another. During this road trip, they discover answers to their problems. This is a cleverly constructed tale. Menus, sights, journals and musical play lists make this almost a summer vacation scrapbook. I confess to feeling very old because I did not recognize 90% of the songs or performers on these play lists, but their story is timeless.
