The Heir by Grace Burrowes 447 pages

Guilty Pleasure. When this book first arrived some time after I had requested it, I was sure that a mistake had been made. For the cover looks like a trashy, thicker cousin of a Harlequin romance type of book and I do not read those kind of books or should I say I stopped reading Georgette Heyer back in high school. On the back cover of this paperback are starred blurbs from such esteemed library review sources as Booklist and Publishers Weekly. So yes, I confess I just had to read a few pages and oh, it is not high literature.
Gayle Windham, Earl of Westhaven, finds himself attracted to the new housekeeper, Mrs. Seaton. Of course, Mrs. Seaton is not quite the woman she seems to be. Anna Seaton is in hiding with her sister, Morgan from their wicked, despicable brother. Anna is actually from a family with means, although her parents died tragically and her brother wants to sell her or her sister or both into white slavery. Anna is a bit of a modern thinker and relishes her sinful meetings with Gayle (Georgette would be blushing to read some of the somewhat racy scenes). Gayle wants to do the right thing and proposes several times to Anna. Anna says yes to sex, no to marriage. Need I say any more? Yes, after the conclusion of this book, an excerpt of her next book, The Soldier was included. Do I get brownie points for NOT reading that excerpt? I will not read it, unless it gets great reviews. No, I have not requested it, yet.
