The Light by DJ MacHale 341 pages

Book 1 in a new trilogy, Morpheus Road by the author of Pendragon. Very atmospheric, in a dark, macabre manner, this reminds me a bit of early Stephen King. Marshall's summer takes a dramatic turn from what he had expected when his best friend, Cooper disappears in a witness protection program. Marshall finds himself experiencing strange visions after he drops a glass souvenir his mother had given to him. She died in an earthquake off on a distant photo shoot. Rejecting his father's offer to take him on a work/vacation to Las Vegas, Marshall is home alone. His house seems to be haunted but when he leaves, the ghosts follow him. Marshall is convinced that if he finds his missing friend he will also find the answers to his problems. Yeah, I finished the tale but I don't feel compelled to check out the next volume.
