I am a big fan of Steve Earle's acting in the best television show EVER "The Wire" which showcased what a Renascence man he is when you add acting to his music, writing song, plays, poetry, short stories and now his first novel. Sure, this guy can do it all but would the book be any good? I listened on audio - self read by the author, of course, and really got hooked on this book. Doc is an addict who has lost pretty much all of his former life as a "real" doctor from a fairly privileged background due to a pretty bad heroin habit. He is living in a San Antonio ghetto in the early 60's and getting by "doctoring" to a society of hustlers, prostitutes, addicts and other societal "misfits". When Graciela enters his life, things change and she becomes an important force in Doc's and everyone else's lives.
