Y: The Last Man: Girl on Girl by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, vol 6); graphic novel, science fiction, dystopia; 128 pages
I'm starting to see that each arc of this series is kind of its own genre. In this one, for instance, we've got a good old fashioned pirate story, which is right up my alley. Yorick and company have bargained and smuggled (respectively) their way onto a converted cruise-cum-cargo ship bound for Japan, in an effort to track down the ninja that kidnapped Ampersand, Yorick's pet monkey (this is important--trust me). Yorick is swiftly discovered, of course, and soon finds himself warming to the captain of the vessal, a saber-toting ex-English major who knows as much about obscure literature as Yorick himself (yeah, I'll freely admit that one of my favorite things about Yorick is his ability to geek out over things only and English major could love). Halfway through the voyage, however, the ship is attacked by a submarine, bent of sinking it before it can reach the South Pacific. For all that this is solidly part of the larger plot, this arc is pretty self-contained, and would be a decent place to start if you had to skip the first half of the series (which I DON'T recommend, but you know how it goes). Another quick read (I read this in its entirety in a lunch hour), that segues nicely into the next volume.
