Tortall and Other Lands/Tamora Pierce

Tortall and Other Lands by Tamora Pierce; young adult, fantasy, short stories; 400 pages

Since I've read just about all of Pierce's Tortall books (I'm waiting to read the Beka Cooper series until the third book is released), I was thrilled to find out about this collection of short stories. I thought the "other lands" in the title were references to countries set in the world of Tortall, but outside that country's boundaries. I was slightly disappointed to find that the phrase actually refers to stories set in new worlds all together. I was less disappointed when I actually read those stories, and wound up loving them every bit as much as the ones set in Pierce's more familiar world.

The back of the book gives a great one-line intro to each story, so I won't go into too much detail on plot. I will say, with no shame, that I squeed like a fangirl when I got to stories about my favorite characters (Nawat! Numair! Daine!).

While I'm really glad I read this, and will be recommending it to everyone I see for the next few weeks, this has just whetted my appetite for a full-length Tortall book, so I'm anxiously awaiting the publication of Mastiff this summer. Expect another Pierce-fest when it arrives.
