Paying for It by Chester Brown 280 pp.
This graphic novel is subtitiled "a comic strip memoir about being a john." Brown, a cartoon artist, chronicles his experiences paying for sex with a number of different prostitutes. While the drawings do depict nudity and sex acts, it is not porn. The small black and white illustrations done in a very matter-of-fact way without intending to titillate. While Brown based the events on actual prostitutes, he does not give their real names or show their faces. Much of what is depicted is the conversations he had with the women. There are also the debates he had with friends over the merits of decriminalizing prostitution, the morality of paying for sex, and whether or not prostitution is demeaning to women. The end notes go into those topics in more detail. All in all I was underwhelmed with this book.
