Dope Sick by Walter Dean Myers p186
I have read a lot of books by Walter Dean Myers. He is probably the most published author of black young adult male books. This felt a little bit rushed and unpolished. Seventeen-year-old "Lil J" is holed up in a house having a dialog with a weird dude. He is trying to escape after a drug deal went south and finds himself almost confessing to the guy. The guy seems to see into his soul and tells him how he could have made better choices at different points in his life. It is gritty and seems real. I wonder if reading this could be a wake up call for other guys at a crossroad in their lives. I preferred Monster about another young guy caught in the prison system for poor choices in his life.
