Wish by Joseph Monninger 191 pages
Get out the box of kleenix. Bee's brother Tommy has cystic fibrosis. Because of his illness, he enters a contest for a dream vacation. His dream is to swim with sharks. He is a shark fanatic and because he is so smart he is expert. When his wish is chosen, he brings his family along to California. Bee understands Tommy and wants his trip to be all that he wants. Mom sees this as an opportunity to pick up another in a long stream of one night stands. Although the trip starts bad, instead of swimming with sharks, they are on a boat with other special needs kids who are content to view a shark. Tommy makes contact with Ty, a surfing shark attack survivor and Tommy's personal hero. Bee meets Little Brew, Ty's younger brother, who looks like a California surfing god. Ty is planning a surfing shoot and it looks like Tommy might get his wish albeit at a huge personal cost. Tommy is a special character well developed by the author. This would be a great summer read.
