Machine Man by Max Barry 277 pgs.
I can't say enough good about this book. It is one where I had to regularly read paragraphs out loud to my husband and found myself smiling and laughing throughout. This is a bit odd because there are some heavy themes and questions about the lengths we are willing to go to improve ourselves. Our hero is Charles Neumann, a Phd mechanical engineer whose strengths do not lie in his people skills. He endures an industrial accident and shifts his laser-like focus on improving the prosthesis that his company buys from him. It is top of the line but still not good enough. Like other books by Max Barry, the corporate entity is interesting and entirely out for itself. Soon enough, Dr. Neumann is back at work with a huge staff and a slightly different mandate. Things continue to get out of hand and really, the result is absolutely entertaining mayhem from falling in love with Lola to going on the lam and hiding out with his surgeon and her many dogs. This is clearly one of my favorites of the year.
