Winner of the 2007 Man Booker Prize, The gathering is set in Dublin where the large Hegarty clan is
coming together to bury the family’s black sheep, Liam. His closest sibling, Veronica, one of the
nine surviving siblings of a dozen (and seven miscarriages), has claimed his
body, a suicide, in Brighton, England. Her
own life is at a crisis point as well. I
wanted to like this well-written book more than I did, but found it slow going
despite my interest in the characters and their back stories. Perhaps there were just too many Hagertys for
me. 261 pp.
