And Then There Were Nuns

And Then There Were Nuns: Adventures in a Cloistered Life by Jane Christmas 304 pp.

I'm going to preface this by saying under normal circumstances I never would have picked this book to read. However, the narrator of the audio book, Elizabeth Wiley is an acquaintance of mine and was nominated for an Audie Award for her work on this book. She didn't win but I thought she did an excellent job.

Jane Christmas had contemplated becoming a nun since her teenage years. Now at 58, with a couple marriages and kids behind her and a surprise marriage proposal from her boyfriend on the table, she decides to find out if the life is for her. In her year long journey she visits multiple convents and a monastery, both Catholic and Anglican, with varying degrees of success. Some experiences were horrible, while others were quite pleasant. Christmas is not taking this quest lightly and many spiritual questions are wrestled with in the course of her journey.  In the end she makes a decision that seems completely right, allowing her the secular life she enjoys while still working with the sisterhood.
