The Devils of Cardona by Matthew Carr, 401 pages.
In 1584 a priest is murdered in a small village in Spain, near the French border in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The blame falls on the Moriscos, people who had or whose ancestors had u. ndergone forced conversion from Islam to Catholicism. Bernardo de Mendoza, once a soldier, but now a judge, is sent to investigate. As more murders occur, and Mendoza encounters Inquistors, crazed landowners, rebels and bandits, he tries to separate the truth from the misdirection. A good solid mystery with interesting characters and a great setting.
