This first novel in a series featuring Montreal Chief
Inspector Armand Gamache, is set in the rural village of Three Pines. Gentle spinster Jane Neal has met an untimely
end in the forest – seemingly shot accidentally by a bow hunter over the
Thanksgiving holiday. But called to the
scene of the accident, Gamache becomes suspicious that this was no
accident. Who would want to harm her on
the eve of her finally showing her art work at the local art festival? The book is filled with interesting and
well-drawn characters and I look forward to reading more of Gamache’s future
cases. 312 pp.
