Legendary Locals Of St. Charles

Legendary Locals Of St. Charles
Don and Dianna Graveman
131 pages

I am like a lot of my fellow St. Louisans in that I am not very familiar with the history of our neighboring community of St. Charles.

Now, that has changed thanks to the hard work of Don and Dianna Graveman whose  Legendary Locals Of St. Charles spotlights the community's prolific past through biographies of over 100 famous residents and prominent visitors to the city.

St. Charles' rich legacy includes a visit from Lewis and Clark who began their expedition Westward there, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne who founded the first school West of the Mississippi and the abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy along with lesser known prominent explorers, military leaders, businessmen, educators and entertainers.

The authors give their subject matter a deal of heft via there general knowledge about St. Charles while simultaneously rescuing many of the area's famous folks from obscurity.

As a result readers are treated to an informative survey history that is compelling without becoming bogged down with the superfluous. A great read for those interested in regional history.
