Tiger's Wife / Tea Obreht 337 p.
This novel got a lot of press this year. Set in Yugoslavia during and after the war, it is the story of a young doctor who goes in search of her grandfather's possessions after his mysterious death. Saturated with a Balkan-style magical realism, but using Kipling's Jungle Book as an additional narrative framework, this is a fascinating if somewhat incoherent novel. The author is clearly a talented, and extremely young, woman. I suspect we will hear more from her.
