It was refreshing to read this violent battle between a drug cartel and a small Rio Grande town, Artemis (population2,500) because the gutsiest enforcer was female! Josie's life is at risk after she arrests the cartel's one hit man and kills another. When the town's most vocal 2nd Amendment vigilante is found murdered and his cache of weapons gone, her job as police chief becomes even more difficult. She gets little respect from the town's leaders and isn't sure which fellow officers may be inside traitors. Her long suffering boy friend wants her to flee and leave the bloody mess behind her. Josie has a dog, a couple of friends and a fierce determination to do the right thing. Lots of action make this a fairly quick read.
