The Diviners

The Diviners by Libba Bray, 578 pages

Ever wonder what Buffy the Vampire Slayer might be like if it was set in New York in 1926*? Look no further! The Diviners follows flapper Evie, her bookish uncle, and the Scooby Gang a motley crew of cohorts as they attempt to solve a series of gruesome murders that are tied together by a little-known cult that's trying to raise the devil. Fun times! Seriously, this book is a blast. Bray does an excellent job bringing Prohibition-era New York to life, as Evie and her pals visit speakeasies and dodge Pinkerton detectives. Her descriptions of Evie's clothes and haircuts are meticulous, and is the 1920s slang just as fantastic? You betski!

This book could be considered historical fiction, paranormal or even horror (the first chapter alone places it in the horror section), and subsequent books in this series will likely have a steampunk theme as well. Something for everyone! Yay!
