The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro 360 pp.
The 1990 art heist at the Gardner Museum in Boston provides a centerpiece for this story. Talented artist Claire Roth is an expert on Degas. She also makes her living doing art reproductions for a high end company while trying hard to make a name for herself with her own art. When approached by the city's most prominent art dealer with a deal to make a copy of the Degas painting stolen in the heist she enters into a Faustian bargain which changes her life, the lives of others and shakes the world of fine art to its core. The story is interesting and intriguing. The mystery of whether or not the recovered Degas is real or a forgery adds to the story. However, my problem with the story is that the female protagonist repeatedly makes stupid decisions and never seems to learn from them.
