Nine interconnected short stories, centering on
Yunior, one of the characters from the author’s acclaimed,
Pulitzer-Prize-winning The brief wondrous
life of Oscar Wao, which I wasn’t all that fond of. However, I loved this collection (although I’m
going to have to beef up my Spanish and Spanish slang to appreciate some of
it). I had read the final story, “The
cheater’s guide to love” in The New
Yorker previously and enjoyed reading it a second time even more – and had
to wonder how much of it might be autobiographical. Great stuff.
