Into the fire

Into the fire: a firsthand account of the most extraordinary battle in the Afghan war by Dakota Meyer & Bing West 239 pgs.

I saw the author on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and he seemed so interesting, I read his book.  In the end, this is another of those "not very uplifting" stories that should be required reading by anyone who has a say in going to war.  The usual stories of how training kicks in when you are under fire and how you don't think about your own safety when you have to help your fellow soldiers...blah, blah, blah, blah, are included here.  More pointedly is the part about coming to the conclusion that you are dead so you might as well do as much as you can in the last few minutes of your life.  Meyer won the Medal of Honor but he feels like he didn't deserve it because he didn't save 4 members of his unit.  I can't agree with him on the medal and I sure want this guy on my side in any fight.  A remarkable story that is well told.
