Guys Read: Funny Business edited by Jon Scieszka 268 p
There is a strong belief that boys do not read for pleasure like girls. Guys do read what they are interested in --- many are not interested in fiction. Jon Scieszka, former elementary teacher and co-author of Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales, Time Warp Trio series and more, founded Guys Read to foster a passion for reading in young boys. This volume is a collection of humorous stories by prominent authors. Although I am obviously not "a guy", I did find the stories funny and easy to read. "Your Question for Author Here" reminded me of an updated Dear Mr. Henshaw (Newbery winner by Beverly Cleary). It is written by another Newbery winner, Kate CiCamillo and Jon Scieszka as a clever collection of letters between a somewhat lazy male student and a weary, but clever author. "Artemis Begins" by Eoin Colfer is a prequel to the popular Artemis Fowl series. The super popular Jeff Kinney, author of the Wimpey Kid series has a rather dark tale of a young brother who outsmarts his nasty older brother. Thumbs up -- and you don't even have to be a guy to enjoy this.
