The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey / Walter Mosley 277 pgs.

Ptolemy Grey is old and close to the end of his life.  He lives in an apartment that has fallen into squalor and sleeps under a table.  He isn't having a lot of luck knowing what is going on around him and an aggressive dope addict neighbor has robbed him several times.  When his great nephew who checks in on him dies in a drive-by shooting, Robyn come into his life.  She isn't really family but has gone to live with Ptolemy's niece.  She is 17 and takes it upon herself to clean up his place and help him out.  With the help of a perhaps less than reputable doctor, Ptolemy gets his mind back in shape and manages to put his affairs on order. The other part of this story is Ptolemy communicating with his former mentor and childhood friend Coydog.  He has dementia fueled conversations and memories about everything Coy taught him.

I'm a big fan of Mosley and this book is another home run as far as I'm concerned.  I'm sure there is much more hidden meaning and important points that I ever actually understand but he tells a beautiful story.
