The Beats: a graphic history by Harvey Pekar, Paul Buhle, et al 199 pp.
A small circle of friends in New York and San Francisco in the late 1940s and early 1950s began a movement that affected literature, art, and music from then on. This book chronicles the lives of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg, William S. Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and many others who were pivotal or tangential to the movement. Nearly half of the book is taken up by biographies of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. The rest is taken up with brief accounts of the myriad of others who made their mark during that era, living fast, hard lives, and frequently dying young. Also featured is the story of the famed City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, which I still haven't managed to visit in 3 trips to the Bay area.
