Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway, 481 pages.
A Booklist best books of 2012 selection, and a winner of a spot on the ALAs Listening list for 2012, as well, Harkaway's book is an almost frantic, energetic adventure. Joe Spork is a clockmaker, and a restorer of odd mechanical objects. When a rather shady friend asks Joe to repair an odd object on behalf of an elderly client, even shadier characters pop up and bodies start to drop. Joe finds himself in the middle of a spy story that has spanned the globe for decades. His elderly client, Edie, tells how her battles began during WWII, fighting the Opium Khan, and how the device Joe has fits in this all, and how it could all bring the world to an end.
Fast-paced, convoluted, and fun.
