Mother Lode by Carol A. Sheldon 398 pp.
In the turn of the 20th Century in a small Michigan copper mining town 19 year old Jorie is accused of murdering his mother, Catherine, by leaving her to die outside in a blizzard. The town sheriff, who has been enamored of the woman since youth, is determined to discover the truth while most of the townspeople believe the young man is guilty. What emerges is the unsettling story of a disturbed woman and her relationship with her son. There are lots of twists in this story and the ending was not quite what I expected. There are a couple loose ends to the story that are never resolved but otherwise it's a suspenseful story.
