Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride, 343 pages

Sam LaCroix has had better days.  Stuck working in fast food after dropping out of college, he at least gets to work with his friends, finding fun in frustrating the new guy and playing potato hockey out back while on break.  But when a wayward potato lands in the tail light of a very shiny, very classic, very expensive car in the parking lot, and the owner of said car, Douglas, comes looking for answers, Sam finds his life turned upside down.  First comes a series of weird questions about things he doesn't know about.  Then there's the encounter in the parking lot with a guy strong enough and crazy enough to pull the bumper off a car.  And of course, as soon as Sam and his friends make it back to his apartment, thoroughly freaked out and scared, Douglas asks for a meeting by sending Sam the reanimated head of his friend Brooke.  Yep, a talking, breathing, for-all-intents-and-purposes-living head.  Needless to say, Sam goes looking for answers and finds out that he's a necromancer, someone who can bring the dead back to life.  And being a necromancer around Douglas (who is, of course, also a necromancer) is not a good thing.

I really enjoyed this book.  The banter between Sam and his friends, especially Ramon, is funny, and the world Lish McBride creates is fantastic.  Of course, there's a little bit of romance (I mean, how could there NOT be when Sam is locked in a cage with the hot daughter of the leader of the local werewolf/fey hound pack?), but plenty of action, especially in the final showdown between Sam and Douglas.  Fans of Heather Brewer's The Chronicles of Vladimer Tod, especially the older ones, will definitely find fun in this, but I would recommend it to anyone who is into lighthearted stories with paranormal elements.
