Rock Manning Goes For Broke by Charlie Jane Anders, 122 pages
Class clown and son of a stunt man, Rock Manning has made a name for himself starring in low-budget, chaotic, slapstick-y short movies that have gone viral online. The viewers, it seems are seeking refuge in the goofy flicks from a never-ending war that has the world in its grips. (The only other choice for respite is going down the rabbit hole of opioids.) Before long, the Red Bandana para-military group is approaching Rock and his filmmaking pal Sally to create some propaganda to cash in on Rock's stardom while selling their extremist views.
In this futuristic novella, Anders creates a parable for what's going on in the world today, complete with extreme politics and extreme measures of escapism. She doesn't draft an answer, or even a conclusion to these issues, but Anders does give readers something to consider as we seek out distractions or ways to deal with what's going on around us. It's an odd little book, but I'll be thinking about Rock Manning for a long time to come.
