Raising Steam: a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett 365 pp.
Mister Simnel with the aid of his "sliding rule" has invented a heaving, clanking, steaming monster that harnesses the power of all the elements: earth, air, fire, and water. He uses his steam engine to create a locomotive and a railway. This disrupts the lives of many who are afraid of or who want to make buck from the new venture. Lord Vetinari believes the railway should be managed by someone other than Simnel and enlists Moist von Lipwig to do the job. Moist must deal with angry dwarfs, goblins who only have person status within the city of Ankh-Morpork, and Vetinari's unreasonable demands. This one was a little hard to follow at first and not my favorite although much of it had me laughing out loud.
