Delicious foods

Delicious foods / James Hannaham 371 pgs.

Let me begin by saying the author narrates this audio book extremely well.  He is, in fact, maybe second only to Bahni Turpin in this department.  But onto the story...Eddie is a central character as his mother, Darlene.  The third major character is "Scotty" who, in actuality is crack cocaine. Scotty is a narrator who really cares about his friends and is looking for new friends.  He gives advice and loves to spend time with them.  Darlene is one of Scotty's friends.  Darlene used to have a great life. She went to college, married her true love and had Eddie.  But things went south when husband Nat is killed in what seems to be a racially motivated incident.  Darlene finds she can't keep it together without Scotty's help...then she can't really keep it together with his help.  She ends up at Delicious foods, a company that harvests from a farm.  Darlene and her coworkers are basically captives.  The accommodations are poor and almost everyone there is friends with Scotty and racking up debt by buying him on credit from the company.  I don't want to give too much away about the plot but there are several distinct sections, each make for wonderfully interesting reading and good for making you think.  Hannaham seems to be a genius but I will have to read more to confirm and I look forward to it.
