War Dances

War Dances by Sherman Alexie  208 pp.

This is a collection of short stories and poems. The stories are varied: alcoholism, a screenwriter's failures, a man's odd obsession with a woman he has met only in airports, a man dealing with the possibility of  brain tumor, a gay bashing with political implications, obituary writing, and more. The poetry covers love, religion, death, the cruelty of the young, Abraham Lincoln's shortcomings, and an amusing "Ode to Mix Tapes." The most powerful piece is the poem titled "Another Proclamation" about Lincoln signing the order for the largest public execution in U.S. history where thirty-eight "mulatto, mixed-bloods, and Indians" were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota. This collection is not Alexie's best but it's worth the brief time it takes to read. I listened to the audiobook read by the author and finished it in an afternoon.
