Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper, 180 pages
2015 Edwards Award Winner
Andy's world is shattered when a car accident leaves him, BJ, and Tyrone alive, but kills his best friend Robby. Andy was driving the car that night, and had been drinking when he crashed his car into the median. Supported by his friends and his girlfriend, Keisha, Andy tries to keep his head up and move on like Tyrone and BJ seem to have done, but the guilt and pain he feels over his actions may prove to be too much.
Like The Battle of Jericho and November Blues, Sharon focuses on high school lives and how one mistake can change everything. One thing I really, really liked about this one is that she tells the story through snippets of conversation, newspaper articles, and school assignments. It's the ephemera of these teens' lives that make up the story, and it works really well. It still has a little bit of a problem-novel feel, but overall I think I liked this one better than either of the two Jericho books I read. It's great YA for those who might be a little more conservative in their tastes.
