My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris, 389 pages
Wow. If I could sum up Ferris' debut graphic novel in one word, "wow" would definitely be it. In this phenomenal book, Ferris tells of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, a budding artist and horror comics lover who's trying to solve the mysterious death of her upstairs neighbor. Set in the late '60s in Chicago, what starts as a fairly straightforward diary ends up surprisingly complex, as Karen delves into her mother's illness, her brother's womanizing ways, the gang-run political landscape, art history, and her neighbor's experiences in World War II. The story is incredibly compelling, and the artwork is simply astounding. This has rocketed to the top of my "Best of 2017" list, and I can't wait to read the next installment.
