When Schwalbe’s remarkable mother, Mary Anne, is diagnosed
in her early seventies with advanced pancreatic cancer, the two turn her
lengthy chemo sessions into a book club where they both read and discuss the same
books. Mary Anne was not only an
actress, an educator at several prestigious schools and the first female
admissions director at Harvard and Radcliffe; she left those jobs to take on a
much more challenging task, as founding director of the Women’s Refugee
Commission. Her son obviously both
admired and loved her and found writing this book cathartic. Don’t necessarily read it as a guide for
reading, but as a tribute to an interesting woman. 336 pp
