Stardust

Stardust : being a romance within the realms of faerie by Neil Gaiman, pictures by Charles Vess, 223 pages

In the pastoral town of Wall, there's not a whole lot of excitement. People tend their herds, run their shops, and everything is done in a proper manner. But every nine years, the gate in the stone wall that gives the village its name is opened, and the residents of Wall pass through to visit a faerie market. This market is in town when Dunstan Thorn makes a deal with a mysterious top-hatted stranger, who promises him his heart's desire in return for lodging during the market. However, Dunstan's heart doesn't desire quite what he thinks it does...

Jump 17 years into the future and Dunstan's son Tristan is madly in love with Victoria, a girl from Wall. While walking her home one evening, the pair witness a falling star, and Victoria promises Tristan anything he wants if he retrieves it for her. Tristan ventures into the faerie realm to fetch the star, and, as expected, adventure ensues.

Stardust is a sweet, classic fairy story, filled with romance, adventure, witches, ghosts, and animals that are not at all what they seem. This was a fun read, and Vess's beautiful illustrations enhance the story greatly.
