Goose Chase by Patrice Kindl; juvenile, fantasy, humor; 228 pages
Alexandria Aurora Fortunato is (despite what her name suggests) a goose girl. Since her mother died, she's lived alone with her flock of 12 geese (her mother's dying wish was that Alexandia look after the geese and never ever let them come to harm). One day, after sharing her lunch with a mysterious old woman, Alexandra is blessed (or cursed) with stunning good looks, tears and turn to diamonds, and magical enchanted hair that showers gold dust every morning ("magical golden dandruff"). Soon Alexandria is being help prisoner by both her own country's prince and the neighboring country's king, both bound to marry her for her fortune. Her attempts to escape lead her on a grant adventure, but will it be enough to avoid marriage to either the cruel king or the bumbling prince?
This book was a quick, fun read. Alexandria narrates, and she's every bit as snarky and sarcastic as I could want a heroine to be, and isn't shy about sharing her opinions with others. Despite her princess-like appearance, she's still a goose girl at heart, so her approach to problems tends to be much more practical than, say, the Prince's. She's clever and bright, and really a fun character to spend a book with. Despite that, there were a few times where I got a little annoyed at how long it took Alexandria to figure things out (like how to escape from the ogresses, for instance, or what was going on with the geese), but all in all this was a fun read. I recommend it for fans of Patricia Wrede's Dealing with Dragons.
