The Vast Fields of Ordinary

The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd, 309 pages

Dade just graduated from high school, and even though he’s known it for years, he’s never told anybody that he’s gay. The only person he’s sure knows is Pablo, the “boyfriend” who won’t publicly acknowledge him and has a girlfriend anyway. He’s also got parents who are so wrapped up in their own problems (and they’re on the verge of divorcing anyway), that they don’t really notice too much when he gets involved with a new crowd that’s OK with his homosexuality.

This was a good book that doesn't make a huge deal out of the main character's coming-out story. Yes, the plot revolved around Dade becoming comfortable with who he is, but it lacked a lot of the high drama that's prevalent in so many teen books. I liked this one. I was a bit surprised by the amount of sex, drugs and alcohol, but that could be because I was never invited to the cool-kid parties in high school.
