Canada

Canada by Richard Ford  420 pp.

Fifteen year old Dell Parsons and his twin sister Berner live a pretty typical life for late 1950s Montana. When their parents rob a bank in nearby North Dakota and get caught, their lives are changed dramatically. Berner takes off for California before a family friend comes to get the teens to prevent the authorities from taking them. Dell goes with the woman and is left in a small Saskatchewan town in the care of her brother, the mysterious Arthur Remlinger. The novel is told from Dell's point of view as he tries to reconcile all that has occurred in his life with his new situation with a man who is hiding a violent past. Eventually Dell is drawn into a murderous situation which again necessitates his leaving to begin his life yet again.

This is one of those books I probably never would have finished had I not been listening to the audiobook version. It is a well written but not riveting novel--just not my cup of tea.
