Toast: the story of a boy's hunger / Nigel Slater, 256 pgs.
A memoir based on the food memories of the author as a boy up to young adulthood. Beginning with his mother, a wonderful loving woman who was not much of a cook and his eventual education as a chef. In between, there was lots of food and memories. His mother dies tragically young and he is stuck with a step mother with whom he never really bonds but she is a good cook. Nigel's father is mostly a good guy but occasionally cruel. He too ends up in an early grave. I loved the way the stories all revolve around food and the way the author makes all the events seem related to the food. An interesting read, especially for foodies.
