The rainbow comes and goes: a mother and son on life, love, and loss / Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt 290 pgs.
Anderson Cooper initiated an email conversation with his mother because he wanted to redefine their relationship as adults and he feared that after her death, he would regret not asking her questions about her life, loves, beliefs, and history. This turned into a long dialog where she and he answered questions very frankly. Cooper learned a lot about his mother's childhood/young adulthood which answered some of his questions about her habits that drive him crazy. He also learned that they have a lot of shared traits.
I saw Cooper speak at the Public Library Association conference and it was fun to hear the stories about his mother and how he felt responsible for her. At the same time, this dialog helped him realize this is something more people should do with parents and relatives.
