The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss by Anderson Cooper & Gloria Vanderbilt 290 pp.
CNN correspondent and host of "Anderson Cooper 360°" and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt hold a written discussion of her life, marriages, tragedies, and the deaths that affected them both. The book is written as running conversation as a series of correspondance, mostly about Vanderbilt but including Cooper's thoughts on what he did and did not know about his mother and her well known, wealthy family. Vanderbilt never discussed much of her early life with her youngest son and is very candid about her life as a child and the infamous custody battle for her, her life mistakes, and how she wished she had received the parental guidance that might have prevented some of the mistakes she made. They are also quite candid about the suicide of Vanderbilt's third son and Cooper's older brother, Carter. This book is interesting, entertaining, and a testament of the love between mother and son presented in a very readable format. My only complaint is the lack of captions or an appendix giving more information about the photos scattered throughout the book.
