Human Croquet

Human Croquet/Kate Atkinson 349 pgs.

Continuing with my goal of reading everything by this great author, this is her second book.  Isobel and Charles are brother and sister with an odd home life.  They are being raised by their cranky old aunt after being abandoned by their parents.  Their grandmother was in the picture for awhile but died.  Lonely and alone, their father returns after many years with a new wife but they are still confused by the disappearance of their mother.  Charles is a short stocky red head and Isobel is a large (and growing) girl with big hands and feet.  Neither has an easy time of it.  This book is a family history of sorts, Isobel does a little time travel and sees her relatives in their younger days and a few different "alternative endings".  She doesn't really control these "trips" but at least one comes in handy when she is being pursued by a mean crowd...or is it all really just a dream?  I still end up loving Isobel and having some feelings for the rest of the crowd.
