Maigret Bides His Time by Georges Simenon (1965) 155 pages
In this book, French Police Superintendent Maigret learns that a wheelchair-bound Corsican immigrant named Palmiri, who he'd been keeping tabs on for 20 years, has been murdered in his apartment. Maigret wonders if the crime is connected to a new spate of jewelry store thefts in Paris. The top suspect for the murder would seem to be Palmiri's live-in girlfriend Aline, but because Maigret's office had been keeping tabs on her as well, and they know that she was out shopping when the murder was committed, this first seems to be a difficult case. The author puts the reader inside Maigret's thinking process, and though a second murder occurs, we see how logic and teamwork solve this crime. I'm finding this series very enjoyable in its understated way.
