A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, 696 pages.
The book that started it all for Westeros, the Targaryeans, the Starks, the Lannisters, and the violent, rapacious citizens of their world. The first volume of the (currently) five volume Song of Ice and Fire series. The book begins at Winterfell, home of Ned Stark, his six children, and his wife. Soon Ned will not just be lord of Winterfell, but hand (as in right-hand-man, I have always thought) to King Robert Baratheon. Pretty soon all the betrayal and the killings, and the lies will start catching up with the great cast of characters and the war will begin. A great read for anyone who likes the TV show or who appreciates a violent epic.
