The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn (2011) 308 pages
Bernie Little, a private detective, is asked to pretend to be a divorced woman's boyfriend while visiting her son at an overnight camp, where the woman, Anya, expects to encounter her ex-husband. She's a bit taken aback when she learns that Chet, Bernie's over-sized dog will come along. But Chet has to come along: he's Bernie's co-investigator as well as the one who tells the story! When they arrive at the camp, the boys haven't yet returned from an overnight hike. When the boys and Turk, their leader, do return, it's without Devin. The leader says that Devin disappeared during the night. Bernie and Chet spring into action, retracing the hike along with a reluctant Turk. They stop to camp for the night, but Turk is gone in the morning. What follows is a saga of murder, drugs, small town corruption, and Bernie's false arrest for murder. Suzie, Bernie's real girlfriend, a newspaper reporter, tries to find out why Bernie has abandoned Chet, which is unthinkable. The action is nonstop and Chet's commentary is always endearing.
