Man-eaters [vol. 1] by Chelsea Cain, art by Kate Niemczyk, 128 pages
In the only-slightly-unreal world of Man-eaters, a mutation of the (absolutely real) housecat-transmitted disease toxoplasmosis is causing girls to transform into wild panthers when they get their periods. Understandably, the world is horrified by this development, and responds in the most predictable way ever: by regulating the pubescent girls of the world for the safety of the boys.
This is a sharp, timely, and wickedly good comic, made even better by the inclusion of three 13-year-old girls among its creators, who provide excellent haiku, stories, and drawings to the volume. I love this, and I will be reading more. For fans of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Naomi Alderman's The Power, and any other works that fight the patriarchy.
